The Society for International Development (Ottawa-Gatineau Chapter), in cooperation with The Canadian Institute of Planners, The United Nations Association in Canada and the Aga Khan Foundation Canada, is pleased to present the 2009 launch of the UN Global Report on Human Settlements. Planning Sustainable Cities reviews recent urban planning practices and approaches, discusses constraints/conflicts therein, and identifies innovative approaches that are more responsive to current challenges of urbanization.
Dr. Winnie Mitullah is a senior researcher at the Institute for Development Studies, University of Nairobi, specializing in local governance research. In a recent publication, Dr. Mitullah with others, examined the Kenya Government Local Authority Transfer Fund (LATF) and related Local Authority Service Development Action Plans (LASDAPs). Dr. Mitullah was also the guest editor and contributor to the spring 2004 Journal of Regional Development Dialogue (RDD), which focused on local governance and poverty alleviation in Africa.
Mark Seasons is the associate dean of undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Environment, and associate professor at the School of Planning at the University of Waterloo. He joined the School in 1998 following 20 years of professional planning practice in Ontario, Alberta and New Zealand. Seasons has a Ph.D. in Regional Planning and Resource Development from the University of Waterloo. He is a fellow and past president of the Canadian Institute of Planners. He is also a member of the Canadian Evaluation Society, Ontario Professional Planners Institute and the Canadian Regional Science Association. His research interests include strategic planning, urban and regional planning, and monitoring and evaluation in the context of municipal government planning practice. He is the author of Chapter 9 in the 2009 GRHS publication Planning Sustainable Cities: Policy Directions.
